OUR SCOPE

Superior Bowen delivered a major roadway milling and paving operation along I-470, executing one of the largest DOT weekend closure resurfacing efforts in company history. The work included full-depth asphalt milling and asphalt resurfacing across a 3-mile, three-lane-wide corridor in both eastbound and westbound directions, including three ramps. The project provided a safer, smoother driving surface for the 60,000–80,000 vehicles that travel I-470 each day.

unique challenges

The scale and schedule of this project required an aggressive approach, condensing work that would typically take 40–50-night shifts into two full weekend closures and limited night work. Crews coordinated complex logistics involving multiple asphalt mixes, large trucking volumes, and continuous plant production to meet tight reopening deadlines. Through meticulous planning, strong leadership, and seamless execution, the team safely delivered high-quality results under intense time constraints.

project highlights

Over two weekends in July, Superior Bowen crews shut down both directions of I-470 to remove approximately 70,000 tons of millings and place 36,000 tons of asphalt within just 58 hours per closure. Milling operations were completed in as little as 18 hours, utilizing more than 100 trucks at peak production. The team deployed six mills, three pavers, and three shuttle buggies, supported by a full fleet of equipment and round-the-clock asphalt plant operations.
