Electrical Line Contact / Strike Procedure

1. Stay on the equipment if it is safe to do so until the line is confirmed de-energized.

  • Never assume all lines are visible or de-energized.
  • The equipment and surrounding area may still be energized.

If you must exit due to fire or immediate danger:

  • Jump clear of the equipment with both feet together.
  • Do NOT touch the equipment and the ground at the same time.
  • Shuffle your feet or bunny hop away to avoid step potential.

2. Clear all personnel from the area.

  • Keep everyone at a safe distance.

3. Call 911 immediately.

  • Ensure someone on-site makes the call and provides the exact location.

4. Once the area is secure, notify your Supervisor and the utility provider.

5. Do NOT touch any downed lines.

  • Only the utility company is authorized to handle them.

6. Notify Willard Barry or Kandy Terpstra.

7. Call 811 to report the utility strike.
